The November 21st meeting was a great opportunity to witness the inner workings of democracy. Each member of the Council was sworn in to their new term. The American government has come far in just 235 years. It’s incredible to think that just a few centuries ago people had to fight for the mere right of representation. This is still the case in some countries around the world today. In Guyana, the government is much different. Guyana practices parliamentary style democracy in addition to the multiple party system. That just means that the people are guided by a president, who oversees a prime minister and a national assembly. Due to the amount of racial hostility present, a contributing factor of electing a president is their race, which is completely ludicrous! The suppression endured by the Guyanese is far more intricate than I would like write about. However, having the opportunity to observe contrasting governments in action, I can say without any doubt, equal representation is superior to cessation of rights.

The meeting was shorter than usual because there was only one Ordinance up for discussion.  Ordinance no. 38-11 was in regards to amending the Greenwood Village Municipal Code that describes the tax exempt status of school fundraising activities. According to State regulations, charitable organizations of schools that partake in fundraising activities whose proceeds benefit the school will be exempted from paying tax on the money raised. The limitations of statue are as followed: tax exempt status will only be applicable if the fundraising does not exceed 12 days and the amount raised does not surpass $25,000. The Ordinance removes these limitations. This means that charitable organizations in public and private schools, k through 12 will not be taxed for fundraising.

As a member of multiple school organizations, I know how important fundraising is. The amendment to the Municipal Code will greatly benefit schools and their students. The action was passed, however there will be a second reading on the matter. I will continue to report on the continuance of the motion after the next Council meeting.

Murti Nauth

My name is Murti Nauth. I'm from Essequibo Coast, Guyana. I've lived in Denver for 9 years with my Mom, two sisters and my step-dad. I attend Littleton High School and I love it! I love to go hiking; this summer I hiked my first fourteener! It was an incredible experience because as difficult as the journey was, it was definitely worth it when we reached the peak. I plan on hiking many more peaks in the summer of 2012, nothing lower than 13,000 ft. I am interested in studying Aerospace Engineering and Business Administration in the future. I also enjoy sports. I am a runner, however my favorite sport to watch is soccer. My favorite sports team is Chelsea FC! I like listening to a variety of music; my favorite artists include Robin Thicke, Kenny G and Keith Urban.
